According to research reported on in March 2015 in the journal Environmental Health, individuals with diabetes need to be cautious during heat waves. Investigators at Umea University in Umea, Sweden, and Lazio Regional Health Service in Rome, Italy, studied the number of deaths in people over 50 years of age and went on to look at those over 50 with health problems. It was found individuals over aged 50, in general had a 22 percent higher risk of dying during heat waves than in lower temperatures. Type 2 diabetics over 50 had a 25 percent increase in deaths during Roman heat waves.
